OK, now I've noticed that the spammers not only come in and start new threads. Apparently their latest trend is to hijack already exiting threads, rename for their purpose and post their amazing offers on various drugs that will make our lives so much better (yeah, right!).... Tongue

I am sick of them and I am sick of reporting them (not in a "I mind helping the developers by reporting them" kinda way, but over the mere fact that they gain access in the first place).

Isn't there anything that can be done? I mean maybe have some appointed moderators that would have to approve say the first five or so (number debatable) posts by new users (and at the same time make a "sweep" among the existing users to sort out spammers already registered) to make sure they are legitimate.

I know varg is doing a great job removing them as soon as she's made aware of them, but let's face it, she has sleep too and have a life and sometimes it feels as if the spammers know when the boards aren't being moderated and take advantage of that. Lips Sealed

Heck, any suggestion that will help with this problem would be welcomed with open arms by me.

*Sighs deeply*

Done ranting for now. Feel free to debate...

PS: I wouldn't be surprised if this topic got hi-jacked too...  red sad

Some boards need a CAPTCHA for every post, but that can get very tedious, especially with how difficult they can be to read. If the right CAPTCHA is used though, I wouldn't mind seeing that implemented. The best I've seen is easily read, you just type in the letters with the correct symbol above them.

I just had to notify of another bot this morning, this one started a whole new thread.  I don't know what the best solution is, but I'd be willing to use a captcha to post if it means we don't have to see all this spam garbage anymore.

I haven't got a clue what a CAPTCHA  is, but if it stops the spam I am all for it.

Wifi, this is a captcha. These are the ones I find to be the least, erm, rage inducing. I hesitate to say best, because I don't like any of them, but in this case it's better than a forum full of spam that I'm not responsible for  Wink

Perhaps a report user button? I know I've seen quite a few users that you just knew you should sit back and wait for the spam post.

Maybe cross-reference new/existing members list with a known database?

We can start by dragonsmacking the french dragon with all the spam....  Unless of course, you're in Montreal and ARE interested in knowing where to buy Cialis online.

All good suggestions.

I for one wouldn't mind using captchas if it helped, but the reason I suggested posts be approved by a moderator until the members was deemed genuine is because I think these days the spammers are not all bots, at least not fully, but rather that there's a human behind to "solve" problems (like verifying login and such) and if that is the case they could work around the captchas.

I also like the user report button, at least that way one wouldn't have to report every single post of those that make multiple spams (not entirely sure how to pluralize spam).

I've noticed a lot of the new bots/spam have been from Russia.

Would it be a sensible idea to have a couple of moderators in other time zones who's only job was to clean up spam. Not flame wars or trolls or anything just obvious and inappropriate spam?

I'd like to see something like that. Also it might relieve varg a bit, might be nice for her to not having to start her day here by looking through stacks of spam reports.

So, after seeing the headline about "free marlboro lights (philippines made!)"  I agree about any/all of the ideas.

+1

Not to mention this might give those of us who are sometimes a little slower at typing a slim chance to post before the faster typers.

I'm posting this here instead of PM so it doesn't seem like I'm making it a secret.

Charmed, since you're by a huge margin the most active reporter of spam, I've gone ahead and made you a global moderator. You can now kill spam on sight instead of reporting it.

Now, while this is something I can't do with the forum settings, I'd like to ask you to restrict your usage of your new power to spam killing only. I am hereby explicitly denying you the right to use your power to moderate the posts of active members and other real humans. Otherwise there would definitely be some backlash against my "abrupt decision" of making you a mod. I trust you can obey this rule. If you don't, your power will be removed very quickly.

If anyone else feels they should be granted this power as well, please PM me. Or, recommend someone else for the job.
