I can watch British comedies and series without a problem, but that was gibberish - like listening to some of our local accents...  which after 8 years I still can't  decipher...

You should try down here.  I have friends that can't understand a word my dad says.  However, he had no problem understanding or being understood in Scotland.  Go figure.
